Is Wholistic Health Even an Option for Me?

Will I Ever Be Healthy Again?

Have you been diagnosed with a chronic, degenerative disease like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, irritable bowel, colitis, hypothyroidism, or obesity? Or an auto-immune condition like lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or celiac disease?  Have you been told that you are doomed with this disease for the rest of your life, and that you will have to take medications the rest of your time here on earth? Well, I’m here to tell you that these things can be reversed! You are not doomed with it for the rest of your life. Your health IS in your control—much more than you realize. The first thing that needs to take place in order to reverse these diseases is a change in your thinking as to what health really is.

Two Main Objectives to Wholistic Health

When I sit with myself or others, and we are discussing how to solve a problem, the first thing I always ask myself and/or others is:  What is our objective?  What are we aiming for?  What is our “north star?”  If you have decided that you want to be healthy and not diseased then here are the two main objectives to doing that:

Get to the Root Cause

You first need to decide which approach you want to take.  Do you want to manage your disease through drugs and surgery and follow the path of traditional medicine known as “disease management” (i.e., the germ theory model)?  This may very well be the “easy” way. Or you can decide to choose the wholistic health and wellness approach by first, uncovering the root cause of the problem.

In chiropractic school, we called wholistic health the above, down; inside, out theory.  It’s where our health comes from God (above) down to us; from the inside of us – the integrity of the internal environment of our bodies – our cells, tissues, organs and systems; and how we present outwardly.  The germ theory model is there is something bad in our environment i.e. germs, and they got me.  “I was an innocent victim, I didn’t do anything wrong to cause this health problem, something just got me – other people’s germs got me.”  This is the allopathic disease management objective.  The second part of your objective with the wholistic health approach is…

Restore Your Body Back to Good Health

You do this by using natural approaches, known as wholistic healthcare.  The natural healthcare practitioner assesses you as a person, and your health as a whole.  They look at your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health.  If the root has been determined to lie in say the emotional area of your health, and they are not a psychiatrist, psychologist or counselor, they may refer you to someone who is – preferably a wholistic practitioner in one of these fields, and perhaps even co-manage you and your health.  Otherwise, your wholistic healthcare practitioner works alongside of you, to help you meet your wholistic health objective – restore your body back to good health using natural approaches.

Before you make your decision as to which path you want to follow – the “manage your disease path,” or the “restore your body back to good health approach,” let me share a very classic example of how pursuing two totally different paths for one common symptom can lead us into two totally different results.

High blood pressure can be caused by multiple things – clogged arteries certainly can be one of them.  But a stressful or fearful situation can too.  Pain can also cause high blood pressure.  These last two can be acute, short-lived, temporary.  Now let’s say I go to the medical doctor because I am not feeling well – perhaps I’m in pain from some unknown cause at the moment.  The medical doctor naturally takes my blood pressure.  The blood pressure is high.  The next step in the medical profession’s algorithm is to prescribe me a blood pressure med and send me on my way.  Never addressing the root cause of the high blood pressure – in this case, pain.

This truly happened to me.  Once the doctor determined I needed a blood pressure medication, he never addressed the reason, or the cause of the pain I was experiencing.  That was the end of the visit.  As it turned out, the pain was caused by a kidney stone.  As a side note:  I didn’t take the prescription for the high blood pressure, I wanted to know what the root cause was first, because that was my objective.

Don’t Be Afraid to be Your Own Advocate

Take charge of your health.  If that means finding someone with greater knowledge in the field of wholistic health than you have, then so be it.  But exercise your discernment, follow your gut, if the practitioner you are sitting in front of is not moving in the direction of your healthcare objective, and you are truly not facing a life or death situation that could alter your life in say the next 24 hours, then don’t be afraid to say “no.”  Don’t let any practitioner, allopathic, functional or otherwise “fear” you into anything.  Take a deep breath, don’t make a hasty decision, do your research (ideally ahead of a crisis), and go from there.

Once you decide what your desired approach is, you need to equip yourself with the knowledge, resources, and—when necessary—healthcare practitioners (traditional or natural) who align with the same course you have chosen.

If you decide you want to restore your body back to good health using natural approaches—the wholistic model—then the next step to doing so is to fully understand the deceptions in the everyday semantics.  I truly believe that these myths and at times flat out deceptions, can prevent us from achieving true wholistic health.
