Chiropractic Care: What it IS, and What it is NOT

It’s Not About Back & Neck Pain, it’s About Good Nerve Supply

When you hear the word “chiropractor” what is the first thing you think of? Back or neck pain? Well here is a “truth” for you – that is not what chiropractic is all about! When you hear the phrase “good nerve supply” what do you think of? Unless you have been to a chiropractor with a wellness philosophy, you probably have never heard this term before, have you? Let me take a few minutes and explain to you about another foundational piece of the physical health pie – Good Nerve Supply – what it is, who needs it, how it occurs and who can help you with it.

What is a Subluxation?

Here is another word that unless you have ever been to a chiropractor, who takes time to do a little educating, you probably have never heard it before, and that word is “subluxation.” In a very simple sense, a subluxation is when the bones in our back or neck, called vertebrae are misaligned, they can stay stuck or locked in that position, putting pressure on the spinal nerves that pass in between the spinal vertebrae, causing a lowered state of health for us. These nerves are the roots of the entire communication highway from the brain to the body and back up again – they play a vital role to every function of the body. Every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body needs good nerve supply.

Quite often the pressure from the misaligned vertebra is not being felt, even in the back or neck. The misalignment, or subluxation I am talking about isn’t a gross dislocation. Only a millimeter of a shift in movement is enough of a misalignment to put pressure on the spinal nerves. I am talking just the weight of a dime is enough pressure to decrease the communication from the nerves to the brain and out to the body by 40%! This is like stepping on the garden hose when we are trying to water the garden – if the garden doesn’t get enough water, it won’t grow and be nourished properly, it might even die. The same is true for the cells, tissues, organs and systems in our body. If they don’t get the proper nerve supply, they will not function optimally, in fact, they could die, as will the parts of the body it was responsible for nourishing and bringing life force to – especially if left uncorrected for any length of time.

What Causes Subluxations?

All kinds of things can cause subluxations. Things like poor posture, poor sleeping habits, repetitive motions, injuring ourselves at work, at home or at play, sports injuries, automobile accidents and even the birthing process itself – for both mom and the baby, can cause these small vertebrae to shift out of alignment.

And know this, a lot of the time, in fact most of the time, at least early on, we are not even “feeling” these subluxations. Then the forces and stresses of life keep being directed to that weakened subluxated area of the spine, until eventually we realize a lowered state of health.

I often had patients disregard a “minor” automobile accident that occurred “years ago” as no longer of any significance. Well automobile accidents, no matter how “minor” or how long ago they occurred, are probably some of the biggest cause of subluxations. You see, once the bones become subluxated, they stay stuck or locked in that position until detected and corrected through chiropractic care. And if left undetected and uncorrected over a long period of time, which quite often is the case, then a lowered state of health results. And not only is our health affected, but the vertebra themselves start undergoing a rapid phase of decay – this is what is known by the medical profession as “osteoarthritis.”

When I used to ask my patients to tell me about the automobile accidents they’ve been in, they first would say “it wasn’t my fault!” Don’t worry, I’m not the police, honest! It doesn’t matter whose fault it is, what’s important is how they hit or were hit, how fast were the cars going etc. Patients seem to be quick to disregard the auto accidents that occurred at a 5-10 mph speed as nothing. But on the contrary, I have seen research videos with a car sitting at a standstill, getting hit at just 5 mph from behind, and their head is doing a whiplash motion. They also seem to disregard those accidents that might have occurred years ago. When in essence, these are just as important if not more so than the more recent accidents. This could be telling me just how long those subluxations have truly been in the spine – in some cases 30, 40 years!

Other causes of subluxation that get extremely overlooked by a patient are childhood “micro” traumas. Things like falls from the tree, the dressing table, the bed, off a horse or learning to ride their bicycle, even learning to walk and the repetitive falls on the bum are most likely when a person’s first subluxation occurred. If a person isn’t bleeding or nothing is broke, we think nothing has happened to them. When in fact, something very serious could have happened to them, they could have become subluxated and not even know it. Then they progress into adulthood with these undetected, long-standing subluxations and lack of nerve supply.

Another thing that’s important to take into consideration are the repetitive motions you experience over days, weeks, months and even years. A mom carrying little ones on the same hip day in and day out, a student carrying the backpack improperly or overloaded, an administrative assistant or computer technologist sitting at the computer for long periods of time, a laborer doing heavy lifting, a delivery person driving for long periods of time every day. These and many other habits can cause subluxations in our spine.

Why a Healthy Spine and Good Nerve Supply is Important

The thing about subluxations is that you don’t necessarily feel when the subluxation first occurs. What you feel are the effects of subluxations, and possibly not until years down the road when another injury occurs. And even then, you are not making the connection of the lowered state of health you are experiencing to the long-standing subluxations in your spine.

Every function of the body requires nerve supply, and that function will be adversely affected when there is nerve interference. If you are experiencing a lowered state of health in any capacity and are working towards restoring the body back to good health, getting good nerve supply back to that function needs to be included in your health plan.

Why Receive Chiropractic Care?

Recently I read an article on obesity and children and about how research shows that the sooner you can take the weight off as a child, the better for your health over time. It said that if a parent helps their child lose excess pounds when they are young it can help prevent serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease when they are older. This is called prevention.

Another prevention concept was implemented when the dental profession starting reaching out to the school age children back in the 60’s – remember the little red pill? This approach was to give a visual demonstration to parents, and children, that they could help prevent cavities and gum disease by brushing their teeth regularly, and having their teeth checked on a routine basis. Prevention.

Well chiropractic is much the same way. A person should have their spine checked and maintained from the time they are young, and more accurately, from the beginning of their life, until they die, but most people aren’t aware of this.

In fact, the reason why maintenance is so important is to keep the spine strong and subluxations at a minimum. The sooner you have nerve interference removed, the less time the nerves are interfered with. Maintenance also helps minimize the long-standing effects of subluxations to the vertebra – in particular degeneration of the bones and discs.

The word cholesterol has become a household word over the past 20 years or more. We all know that high cholesterol levels can be very dangerous to our health, in fact it can be deadly if left undetected and uncorrected. So, what do people do to prevent this? They have their cholesterol level checked on a regular basis. And why do they have to have it checked? Because they can’t feel clogged arteries. Well subluxations are much the same way. You can’t feel subluxations. And if left undetected, and uncorrected, over time that loss of nerve flow will cause a lowered state of health. That’s why it’s so important for everyone, including children, to be checked for subluxations on a regular basis. What chiropractic does is detects and corrects the subluxations in your spine. This is called a chiropractic adjustment. What the adjustment does is restore the nerve supply back to the body, allowing the body to heal itself. It’s the power that made the body – God – that actually heals the body. Chiropractors just simply introduce a light force into the body, to allow the body to remove the nerve interference, and in turn allows the body to heal itself.

When the subluxation occurs, it causes a weakening in that particular area of the spine. Then when a more serious injury occurs the forces automatically go to the weakened area first. It’s at this point a lot of people will first pay attention to their symptoms. They think the most recent injury is what “caused” the pain when in reality it could very easily have been years before when that subluxation first occurred. That last stress, injury, trauma; that caused the pain, was simply the “straw that broke the proverbial camels back!”

I caution you to not disregard the micro traumas. The injuries where nothing was broke or bleeding so you didn’t think you got hurt – or you didn’t think your child got hurt. This is the time to have your spine examined by a chiropractor. In fact, Day 1 of life is the time to have our spines checked. Remember, even the birthing process can cause subluxations.

People often ask me if I think their job is causing their subluxations (they never seem to ask me if their recreational activities cause their subluxations!). I tell them that it is possible, but the answer isn’t to quit our job, or worse, our recreational activities. The answer is to have your spine checked and the subluxations corrected.

Chiropractors Do Not Treat Disease

It’s most important to understand that chiropractic is not a treatment for disease. Its purpose is to remove the spinal nerve stress. Spinal nerve stress interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system. It can weaken internal organs and organ systems, lower resistance, reduce healing potential and set the stage for sickness and disorders of all kinds.
When a chiropractor frees the nervous system from spinal stress, the healing power of the body is unleashed: the immune system functions more efficiently, resistance to disease increases, and yours, and your child’s body functions more efficiently. You and your children can respond to internal and external environmental stresses such as germs, changes in temperature, humidity, toxins, pollen and all the other stresses you come in contact with more efficiently.

Who Can Benefit from Chiropractic Care?

We all should be having our spines checked on a regular basis – throughout life – from cradle to grave. Just as each of us, infant, toddler, teen and adult are to be eating properly and exercising throughout life to achieve and maintain optimum health, so must we maintain the health of our spine.
