We are a quick fix society. But God is not. If you have known God in your life personally for any length of time, you probably have come to find out, He is not usually in a hurry – for anything. Sometimes we see the world, excuse the expression “going to hell in a handbasket” and we wonder why He allows these things to continue to happen – can’t He hurry up and put an end to this destruction already, or better yet, come back on a cloud while the trumpet sounds and rescue us from all of this pain and suffering? While we might cry out in agony at times, we need to also be reminded that “’For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.’” (Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV). God is not a quick fix God. While a miracle can be instantaneous, if it would not serve us to our best to have something “instantly happen,” He is not going to do it. He is also not the magic Jeanie in the bottle, that we toss up a quick, selfish prayer and expect Him to appease us.
There is No Magic Pill, Potion, or Program
Neither is there a magic pill or potion, or even a magic food, that we can take or eat and have long lasting, positive effects. Our bodies don’t work that way. But that is what society expects. We have been duped into believing that we do not need to make any changes in our lives to the root cause of our symptoms, but just take this magic pill and your problem will be solved.
When I managed the health food store, customers would come in all the time looking for the “natural” magic pill. Their mindset was still following the allopathic model – symptom or pain here, take this and problem goes away. While they were a step in the right direction, seeking something natural as opposed to a pharmaceutical toxin, they were still on the wrong path. They weren’t seeking what the root cause was. They may have read an article in the latest women’s magazine, or listened to some health guru on T.V. telling them if they had this symptom, then they were most likely deficient in this vitamin or mineral. Then they would run out to the health food store to acquire that vitamin or mineral – in quantity. They might even be told that an off the wall produce that is only found in a 3rd world country half way around the world, was the solution, but since it was so hard to come by, the multi-level marketing company would make it into a magic pill that they would be more than willing to sell you at an astronomical price. This would be all you would have to take for your one deficiency that was causing your one symptom and all your health problems would go away. Or, if the food was accessible, they would go in search for that “magic food” thinking if they would just consume enough of it their symptom would resolve. But this is only ½ the story.
Absence of Symptoms Does not Equate to Health
Just because you are not feeling something doesn’t mean everything is fine and your body is in good holistic balance. My Mom had the “usual” aches and pains that you might expect a typical 81-year-old woman to have. But what she was never told was that her digestive health was out of balance, let alone diseased. She “felt fine” where her digestive health was concerned. Or maybe because no one told her it was out of balance, she figured her symptoms were “normal.” Regardless, one day she was feeling very weak, her neighbor noticed that her color did not look good at all, she was jaundice, took her to the hospital and 2-weeks and a day later her body gave up her spirit and she went home to Jesus. Diagnosis? Bile duct cancer. There is always a root cause, regardless of symptoms or not.
If I take a magic pill for the headache I am having, and the pain goes away, that does not mean for one minute that the root cause has been addressed. Granted, there most likely was inflammation, and by taking the anti-inflammatory, the inflammation was reduced causing the pain to go away. But what was causing the inflammation to begin with? If this root cause is not addressed, the symptoms will be back. And worse, the cause is still there and possibly getting worse.

Good Things In, Bad Things Out – It’s That Simple
The other ½ of the story is, we have to stop doing the things that caused the imbalance in the body to begin with – a poor diet for starters as well as an unhealthy lifestyle. An unhealthy lifestyle is not just limited to the poor physical health you might be living, it goes way beyond that. It includes your emotional health – are you a joyful, loving person; or does anger and bitterness consume you too often at times? What about your mental health – are you burning the candle at both ends, not allowing enough down time to regenerate your brain cells? And of course, how is your spiritual health? Are you constantly seeking truth in all you think, say and do? As I heard a popular talk show commentator say recently, “truth is powerful, it gives you strength of spirit, soul and body.”
See my blog “What is True Wholistic Health” for a greater appreciation of what it means to truly approach your health wholistically by getting to the root cause of the problem and restoring your body back to good health using a wide variety of healthy foods, drinking plenty of clean water, getting regular exercise and quality sleep – all of these things are a far greater alternative than simply reaching for the magic pill.
In Summary
- God is not a quick fix God, He is never in a hurry, but His timing is always perfect.
- There is no such thing as a magic pill, whether it be a prescription for long-term chronic problems, or a natural supplement for a vitamin deficiency.
- Getting to the root cause is the only way to restore your body back to good health, followed by a wide variety of tools and a comprehensive, wholistic approach.
