“For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” (2 Thessalonians 3:10)
Picking back up on the vision that Father God showed me many years ago about the health of America, I wanted to give thought to what He might have seen or meant by “slothfulness,” and why it was a problem for our wholistic health. (see the whole vision here).
What is Slothfulness?
Let’s first review that particular part of the word from Him:
“I also see slothfulness, laziness. All of these things hurt My heart and are not My plans for them. …they will eat foods made by man because they are fast, easy, and cheap.”
And the definition of slothfulness: implies a temperamental inability to act promptly or speedily when action or speed is called for. The word lazy is a synonym of slothful, and its definition is: disinclined to activity or exertion: not energetic or vigorous.
Hopefully you get the picture! But what does this have to do with our wholistic health and why does it hurt God’s heart?
A Wholistic Look at Slothfulness
Physical
In the most basic sense, physically, it implies that what God is seeing are people not moving very much – lack of physical activity. Whether it be riding in cars or public transportation as opposed to walking. Simply not engaging in physical labor as opposed to relying on all of the modern-day conveniences can lend to slothfulness if we are not conscious of this. Or even to the extent of being a couch potato – sitting around watching T.V., being on the internet, or playing video games – including able-bodied grown adults engaging for hours on end on these mindless activities. Not being mindful of actively pursuing our purpose.
Mental
What I feel God was seeing here in the mental sense of lacking in motivation is how moving through one’s daily life without direction or purpose contributes to slothfulness. Lacking in vision. Not even knowing why they get out of bed in the morning except to possibly earn the bare minimum to pay the bills and survive. Again, wasting time on obsessive video games – and yes, this is really occurring almost to the point of crisis for our future generation – especially our young men. This certainly has a negative impact on a person’s mental health. I’m sure there are many other passive, mindless activities that qualify someone to be slothful as well. And of course, 2 Thessalonians says “if anyone is not willing to work he will not eat.” And eating the foods God made for us sustains us physically to do His work.
Emotional
“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” (Proverbs 13:4). Our emotional health can encompass a broad range of areas including literally our emotions, but also our connections and community with family and friends. All relationships take work and commitment – whether it simply be with friends, on up the line of importance to your spouse. Life in this area cannot be passive i.e. slothful. You only receive what you put into all kinds of relationships and connections. Communication is also key in this area of our health. When you are diligent with giving and being an active participant, you will be richly blessed. But being slothful with our emotional health reaps nothing.
Spiritual
The last place we want to be slothful and passive is with our spiritual health; after all, this is the core of our very being and life itself. Our health and the way we live our lives needs to have what God says in His Word, the Bible, at the core of everything we think, say and do. We can’t afford to be slothful when it comes to God!
The Solution to Slothfulness
Assess your life in each of these areas of your health – mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Are you consistently acting in a passive, if not slothful manner? Be honest with yourself and then write down some ways you plan to change this. After all the demise of being slothful, is, well, slothfulness itself! And this is certainly not God’s will for you, and it certainly hurts His heart. He made you for far more than being a sluggard!
Spend time with Him and ask Him how He wants you to spend your time and your life. Ask Him what are ways that please His heart. You certainly will never go wrong when you consistently walk actively in His ways. If you start here, by seeking Him and His will and way for your days, and you obey His direction, you almost certainly won’t have to worry about being slothful! The question is: do you have the desire to lend your ear to His voice?
