Inaugural Appalachian Trail Backpacking Trip – James River to Waynesboro, VA June 2000

Hiking the entire Appalachian Trail one day was on my bucket list for many years.  In 2000 I had the opportunity to “get my feet wet” (literally!) and give it a 3 week trial run with a college friend, Shelly Page.  Bess & Jim Tennant were Trail hosts in the Lynchburg, VA area and they put me up for the night.  Jim quickly became my backpacking mentor!  Bess & Jim put me on the Trail at the James River, and 3 days later I met up with Shelly in Buena Vista, VA.  By the time I came off after one week (not 3!) I took that bucket list item right off my list!  Until I learned there was another way.  There are so many stories just in this first outing, and eventually I would have 57 total hikes under my belt before completing the Trail.  I invite you to journey along with me as I photo journal each of those trips!  For an even more in-depth and enjoyable, and at times, jaw-dropping story, be on the lookout for my AT Trilogy Memoir in the months to come!
