This section was done over 3 days, 42.9 miles. I drove up to Four Pines Hostel in Catawba, VA and tented there Friday night. In the morning Eddie the shuttle driver gave me a ride to Craig Creek where I “slack packed” (although I still carried probably a 10-12 lb pack loaded down with water, food, emergency provisions including a tarp and a rain jacket) 15.4 miles. The highlights of Day 1 were the Audie Murphy Monument and Dragon’s Tooth. The day finished up with dinner at an all you can eat, family style dinner at the Homeplace Restaurant.
I stayed at the hostel one more night before I headed back out for 2 more days of full backpacking. This hike, over 3 days is what is called the Triple Crown — Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker’s Cliffs. This was another memorable hike and not all of it good! Come journey with me…
